About Skin Needling
The concept of Skin Needling is based on the skin’s natural ability to repair itself whenever it encounters physical damage such as cuts, burns and other abrasions.
Immediately after an injury to the skin our body reuses the damaged collagen and elastin fibres as well as other damaged skin components to produce new ones. Skin Needling allows for controlled induction of the skin’s self repair mechanism by creating micro-“injuries” in the skin which triggers new collagen synthesis.
The result is smoother, firmer and younger looking skin. Micro needling is the process carried out with a Micro needling pen with multiple small needles. These needles penetrate the upper layers of skin to a depth of from 0.25 up to 1.5 mm (depending on area of the face/body or skin condition).
This process has two major benefits. It effectively stimulates collagen formation at the same time as providing a clear channel for topical serums to be absorbed more effectively through the top layer (epidermis) of skin.
Skin needling creates very microscopic channels, flushing of the skin is the best indicator for the perfect treatment. The inflammatory reaction of the skin is short and fades significantly within hours from redness to pinkish that may last from 12 to 24hours on average, this also depends on your skin’s sensitivity. Your skin will feel a sensation like sunburn. A flushed look can last usually 48 hours and you may experience some flakiness.
Skin Needling is a form of Collagen Induction Therapy which is intended to smooth wrinkles, rejuvenate skin, reduce pore size, reduce stretch marks, soften Hyperpigmentation, tighten skin, improve skin texture and improve depressed acne scarring.
As your aesthetician needles across your skin, it makes pin point punctures into the dermis – most of which are simply temporarily opening your pores. Your body perceives this as damage, which triggers the release of growth factors that, in turn, stimulate the production of elastin and collagen.
The human body is designed to react to any injury by initiating the healing process, but usually it will just mend as far as it has to keep you in good health – which is very different to healing to a cosmetic level. By persistently triggering this healing process, you encourage your body to keep repairing until the job is done. Skin needling may be conducted safely on all colours of skin and all types of skin.
You will see results quickly. After 5 days your skin will look plump and hydrated, however collagen will grow from around the 6 week mark.
Skin needling will improve the thickness of the dermis as well as the epidermis. You will notice improvement in the skin texture, evenness and a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. Your skin will continue to improve over the next 6-12 weeks. We recommend upto 4 treatments for best results and sometimes more are needed, depending on the result you are wanting to achieve.
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
What is Skin Needling (CIT) ?
Skin Needling is a treatment using very fine needles. It is a medical device used in micro needling to break down old scar tissue & to stimulate skin cells to proliferate. This cell multiplication results in the formation of new tissue layers of elastin and collagen fibres (neo-collagenesis) as well as in new capillaries for an improved blood supply (neo-angiogenesis). The procedures are called Scar Reduction Therapy (SRT) & Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT).
What is the difference between Skin Needling and other skin rejuvenating techniques?
In contrast to all ablative techniques like Lasers and Fractional Laser treatments, Skin Needling stimulates new tissue formation – it acts constructively and the skin remains intact. The skin does not get damaged (unlike other devices) and therefore will not go into a wound healing response. Skin Needling significantly improves atrophic scars & improves skin texture.
What effects does Skin Needling have on the skin?
Skin Needling improves the thickness of the dermis as well as the epidermis. This in return improves skin texture and reduces wrinkles. It also has a positive effect on hyper-pigmentation as well as on hypo-pigmentation. Reduces disfiguring scars & acne scars, stimulates new collagen fibres, improves blood supply and harmonises pigmentation.
How is Skin Needling performed and does it hurt?
The skin is cleaned and afterwards numbed with an appropriate numbing cream so it should not hurt at all. Skin is thoroughly needled in such a way, that each skin part is needled about 15 to 20 times. An even flushing is the best indication for a perfect medical performance.
Can Skin Needling be performed on any skin colour?
Since Skin Needling does not use thermal heat (unlike IPL & Lasers) it is safe to use on all skin types and all skin colours. There is no risk of post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation.
How often can Skin Needling be repeated?
For Collagen Induction Therapy we recommend to start with 3 treatments, but with a minimum separation time of 6 to 8 weeks between treatments. For Scar Reduction Therapy an average of 3 to 5 treatments are recommended, with an improvement of 70-80%. Unlike ablative procedures for facial skin only, the Skin Needling can be used on all skin parts of the body (neck, décolleté, arms, legs, etc).
What are the side effects from Skin Needling?
There are virtually no negative side effects, and none have ever been reported in over 150,000 procedures performed worldwide.
Are there any risk of post-op infections?
Since the tiny pricking channels close within one hour, and provided the procedure is done under clinical conditions, post-op infections are very unlikely.
What is the down time after a Skin Needling treatment?
The inflammatory reaction of the skin is extremely short and fades significantly within hours from redness to pinkish that may last for 24 hours on average. In order to reduce visible redness, we recommend healing minerals, peptides and hyaluronic acid after the procedure, and to protect the skin with cosmetic grade sun screen. We also recommend the use of mineral makeup to help with the healing.
What should I avoid on my skin?
To ensure the right healing environment, for 2-3 days avoid the use of Alpha Hydroxy Acids (for example – Glycolic Acid), Retinol, acidic or “active” ingredients.
What Should I use on my skin after Skin Needling?
A gentle Cleanser to soothe, Hyaluronic Acid to hydrate, heal balm to protect, a high-grade Sunscreen to help heal but also to protect.
Does Skin Needling have the same effect as Fractional Laser Therapy?
Yes, but the mechanism of action of a Fractional Laser is totally different. The laser beam sets a burn wound that results in necrosis. After an inflammatory process the necrosis transforms into fibrotic tissue in forms of micro scars. Nerve cells are “melted” by the hot laser beam, therefore the treatment is relatively painful. As the doctor cannot see the previous set scars under the epidermis in a follow-up treatment, it is extreme difficult for them to set an even scar pattern.
This is the reason why more treatments are required than initially anticipated. But overall, as reported in clinical trials and besides costly investment in lasers, both therapies have about the same results for facial treatments.
